The blue ghost, Inky, is seeking to position itself at a similar fixed spot. Pinky, the pink ghost (naturally), simply wants to position itself at a point that’s 32 pixels in front of Pac-Man’s mouth. ![]() Instead, it’s only Blinky, the red ghost, who doggedly pursues you throughout the game. Iwatani intentionally avoided programming them with that purpose, since that would have resulted in Pac-Man zipping around the screen with four ghosts always right behind him. When you play the game, it might seem as if the four ghosts are actively chasing you. So we wanted to include female players, so it would become cleaner and brighter.” People had to go to the arcade center to play games. ![]() “The reason I created Pac-Man was because we wanted to attract female gamers,” he says. Iwatani wanted to change this, creating something that could appeal to both women and families, he says. While today’s player is slightly more likely to be male, gaming in the late 1970s was pretty much exclusively a men’s club. The point of the game was to attract girls. This week, at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Toru Iwatani, creator of the game, offered a postmortem on the industry’s biggest franchise - and told a few tales most fans have probably never heard. Kinkys are colored green near the end of the game.Be careful if Pac-Man is directly behind Clyde though as it takes some time to emit a Pac-Dot. It isn't really much of an ability, as it only keeps Pac-Man on the maze longer. All he does is spit out larger 20-point Pac-Dots. His ability is the least dangerous when compared to the others. If a Kinky merges with Clyde, Clyde becomes immensely large. In later parts of the game, Inky seems to choose Pac-Man as his target, but will change his target often. The copy of Inky disappears when a Power Pellet is eaten, and hitting it with a dash arrow depletes it as well. However, Inky can only use the ability when entering "scatter" mode. Kinky's Japanese "Character" name, 拈くれ Hinekure, roughly translates to "perverse" or "contrary", which is true to how he behaves in Arrangement as he is the only ghost that can never harm Pac-Man due to his permanent vulnerability. The speed he can do this depends on how far the player is. The ghost Kinky targets is always pre-determined depending on the stage. He also seems to have the capacity to create machines (as seen in the last round of Pac-Man Arrangement). He will chase after a ghost on-screen, and said ghost significantly slows down until Kinky catches it. As aforementioned, Kinky can merge himself with other ghosts. ![]()
